Catalogue Note
The present pair of vases is accompanied by an original page of a guest book purported to have belonged to a Mrs. Porter. The page features an inscribed entry from a guest, who by repute, gifted the vases to Mrs. Porter. The inscription in Chinese includes wishes for a long and prosperous life, and records the day of the tribute: the eighth month of the thirteenth year of the Guangxu reign, or the dinghai year (corresponding to 1887). It is signed with a seal of Zhang Yin Huan. Below, a signature in English, reads: 'Chang Yan Hoon, Canton, China, October 3rd 1887'. Also included is a photograph of a Chinese gentleman, presumably Mr. Zhang.
