Catalogue Note

Josiah Bradlee was the grandfather of the esteemed Washington Post editor Benjamin Bradlee. By 1851 he was one of the wealthiest people in Massachusetts. A transaction from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society dated June 3, 1845 reveals a letter from Bradlee, stating: 'I have the pleasure of sending to your care, a pair of China Flower Vases, which I beg you to present to the...Society for their elegant new Hall.'

The gift of the vase from George B. Jones is also noted in the Society's transaction dated April 21, 1849: 'Mr. George B. Jones presented to the Society a valuable Chinese Vase, whereupon the thanks of the Society were voted to Mr. Jones.'
