Catalogue Note
John Murphy, originally from Ireland, was included on the Salisbury Township tax records from 1770-1789. He was probably the earliest clockmaker in Lehigh county having established himself there as early as 1775. For additional information see James W. Gibbs, Pennsylvania Clocks and Watches: Antique Timepieces and Their Makers, (University Park, PA: Pennsylvania State University Press, 1984), p. 178.
