Description

  • height 22 in.
each painted in rich underglaze-blue with three registers of cartouches enclosing melon vines and leaves suspending from a tree, the leaves decorated with cross-hatched pattern, the matching domed covers surmounted by a bud finial. Some restoration and chips.

Condition

One of the jars with a shallow 0.5 cm chip to the interior rim. Minor fritting and wear to the rim. The other jar has a small firing flaw on the rim and an area of iron spot/pinholes above the foot. Both in otherwise good condition. One of the covers has a 1.5 cm chip on the rim, near a 8 cm hairline crack, appearing to correspond to a large triangular 1.5 cm chip on the inside rim. There is also a small 0.5 cm shallow chip on the rim. One small area of kiln grit and tiny iron spots scattered. The finial on the other cover was repainted, the paint now crackled and with some flaking. Some minor wear and fritting around the rim.
