Catalogue Note

The monogram is that of Edward Lind Morse (1857-1923), who in 1878 graduated from Yale University where he was a member of Scoll & Key society and Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.  In 1885 Morse moved to Berlin to pursue painting, and by 1889 had relocated to Paris to study under Bouguereau.  He exhibited at the Salon of the Champs-Elysées, the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Artists and the Philadelphia Academy.  Upon his return to the United States he maintained a studio in Washington D.C., and was a member of the National Arts Club of New York, and the Cosmos Club of Washington.
