Condition

Overall in very good original condition. This is not a functional radiator. This piece is truly a prototype and therefore there are elements of the production which remained visible, such as joints, repairs and minor inconsistencies in color across the radiator. With approximately eight repaired cracks and ten cracks with minor separation. The piece is stable as it attaches to the wall by a series of hooks to the steel backing of the sculpture. There are scattered small sections which compromise a slightly grainier concrete composite. The adhesive used to affix the concrete front to the steel structure is visible. The repaired cracks appear to use a slightly different concrete composite. This model is intended to be fitted into a corner and comprises two separate elements. With detailed installation template which provides the location for the placement of the hooks on the wall. This piece is being sold with a fitted crate.

Catalogue Note

"Sometimes you find yourself looking at very ordinary things in such a strange way that a new world seems to open up"  Joris Laarman

In designing the "Heatwave," Joris Laarman sought to take the often mundane concealed form of the radiator and elevate it to what he called "wall lingerie."  The result is a truly sculptural expression, which also proposes a more technically efficient method of heat distribution.  The present lot is a singular prototype, built by Laarman himself, as his graduation project from the Eindoven Design Academy.  This model was later developed into a limited production executed in collaboration with Droog and manufactured by Jaga, the international radiator company.  Examples of "Heatwave" have been shown in various exhibitions worldwide and are in a number of permanent collections, including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the Stedelijk Museum.  In 2006, the model was given the Red Dot award for excellence in product design.
