Description

  • 90cm. high, 130cm. wide, 56cm. deep
with a domed panelled top, the front with four panels carved with tracery, the raised panelled sides with an iron handle, on stile feet

This coffer with a domed top is a rare example from its time and continued to be made until the 17th century but the decoration followed the style of the different periods. A related coffer with domed top and tracery front and linefold side panels is illustrated by Bruno Perrier, Haute Epoque Moyen-Age-Renaissance-VIIe, 7th December 1993, p. 62, no 43, where he illustrates a related coffer with planked domed top above a panelled tracery front described as Northern French, late 15th/early 16th century.

Condition

In overall good condition. Some minor marks, dents and scratches due to use and age. Minor horizontal dryness cracks to the upper right front (as visible in the catalogue image). A vertical crack to the right side and a horizontal crack to the lower left side. Two oak strips inserted underneath the sides of the domed top.
