Catalogue Note
The Brussels woven tapestries were inspired by the set of the Life of Constantine the Great, ordered by Louis XIII in 1622 and woven in Paris and Rome, from designs by Peter Paul Rubens. This set was presented to Cardinal Barberini as a gift and is now in the Philadelphia Museum.
Two Brussels weavings, one of the same subject as offered here, and the other of The Battle of Milvian Bridge, bear the Brussels Brabant town mark, and the initials ILMS (S reversed), were offered at Sotheby's, Château de Beloeil, 17th June 1992, removed from the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, The Property of His Grace the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon, lots 404 and 405. Seven panels from the same cartoons used for the Holyrood panels, though in different borders, are recorded in the Musée Ariana, Geneva, Collection of Gustave Revilliod.
