Description
- 58cm. high
finely carved in full round, depicting the juvenile Virgin standing in an elegant S-curve, holding the infant Christ in her proper left arm, an orb in her proper right hand, looking at each other with an expression of intimate joy, on integrally carved plinth, later polychromy
Condition
Apparently in overall good condition with some smaller losses to the carvings, especially to the plinth and lower end of the Virgin's cloak. Later polychromy (probably 18th/19th century) refreshed (restored at the Bayrisches Nationalmuseum, Munich, in 2008). Smaller paintlosses to the reverse. Parts of proper left arm and hand of the Child missing, right hand probably replaced. Arms carved separately and probably re-attached. Few small restorations. Head of Virgin pierced, related smaller cracks, probably due to former attachment of a crown. Few old nails. Traces of old woodworm.
