The Arts and Crafts Movement (1880-1910) was a reformist movement which grew from the desire to oppose standardisation and industrialisation it was the precursor of Art Nouveau. Inspired by John Ruskin, the British art critic and social thinker together with the architect William Morris.
In jewellery, designs were often influenced as in this example, by nature and organic forms, stones were often chosen for their colours and not for their monetary value and were sometimes left uncut and in their rough form. Metals such as copper, brass, aluminium, and silver were used replacing the precious ones. This movement had an influence on many different areas including jewellery, architecture, furniture and crafts.
Opal displaying good play-of-colour with red and green as the dominant colours, some of the original matrix showing on surface. Enamel with some scratches, has been later restored. In good condition.
