Description

  • 92cm. high, 169cm. wide, 45.5cm. deep; 3ft. ¼in., 5ft. 6½in., 1ft. 5¾in.
with gadroon moulded borders, lotus carved brackets and the front with four paw feet, the doors now with pleated silk, and the interior with adjustable shelves, formerly with grilles

Condition

This piece shows signs of having a superstructure originally, there are marks which seem to suggest this. Traces of glass securing stickers to the top. There are marks to the two central doors - where they have come into contact with the keys in the locks of the side doors. There are small chips to the gadrooned border. The silk pleating on the doors is very dirty. Old marks and scratches consistent with this being a 'working' piece of company furniture.

Catalogue Note

The offered lot has a strong architectural feel with its scrolled brackets and patera, these 'Grecian' references were described in Gillows pattern book as 'neat moulded pilasters, carved trusses and patteras'. It also relates to a group of furniture commissioned for Belvoir Castle, for John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (d.1857). For other examples by Gillows that share similarities see the library furniture at Tatton Park, Cheshire and at Dallam Tower, Cumbria illustrated Susan E, Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Woodbridge 2008, p. 375 and p. 379. It also relates very closely to another breakfront side cabinet attributed to Gillows and sold by Christies, 10 March 2005, lot 17.
