Catalogue Note
James Mein was the son of Alexander Mein an upholsterer in Edinburgh who traded from premises at Roxburgh Street, Kelso. The firm's commissions include a group of furniture supplied to the Dukes of Roxburghe for Floors Castle
The present lot would appear highly unusual in the context of Scottish furniture produced during the second quarter of the 19th century. The use of exotic specimen timbers including solid ebony and slightly eccentric handling of the carving are more consistent with colonial furniture produced in the English style at this time. Comparisons with both West Indian and East Indian furniture can be drawn, such as that exported from Jamaica and Ceylon towards the mid-19th century. It may therefore be the case that James Mein acted as a retailer in this instance rather than a manufacturer.
