Provenance
William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme, at Thornton Manor before 1913 and probably in the Recreation Room by 1904. (Thornton Manor Inventory of 1904, p.39, refers including `wreaths, honeysuckle and a vase at the top, gryphons and festoons and other ornament £400', and again in the Thornton Manor inventory of 1912/13, p.48, TM428, including surmounts, £400.
The Property of the Late The Right Honourable The Viscount Leverhulme, K.G., Sold by Order of the Executors, The Leverhulme Collection, Thornton Manor, Merseyside, Sotheby's house sale, 26-28 June 2001, lot 136.
Condition
The gilding is chipped in places and will need to be touched up as there are some obvious losses. The gilding is quite dull in colour and is largely original with some touched up areas particularly on the tablet at the top. There are some minor losses to carved detail. Both mirrors have plugged holes on the front of the frame all around suggesting that they might originally have had paterae or some such motif. Originally they would have had a cresting which is now no longer present and fixing holes are visible to the back of the frame. One main plate is rather chipped on the surface below the paterae motifs. One frame with some bruising and losses to the outer leaf carved moulding to the lower left side. A decorative pair of mirrors of large scale.
