Catalogue Note

See H. Göbel, Wandteppiche, Leipzig, 1923, part 1, vol. 2, no. 307 for a closely related version in the Residenzschloss Würzburg showing the complete Earth and Fire composition.

The present panel is a reduced version of a composition of Earth and Fire from a series of the Elements designed by Lodewijk (Ludwig) van Schoor.  Variations were produced according to patrons' specifications; in the present version Earth is shown before a  classical architectural setting, rather than the landscape background seen in the Würzburg version.  Another version showing just Earth was sold at Christie's London, May 18, 1995, lot 218.
