- 68cm, 26 3/4 in long
detachable electroplate liner, the sides applied with lozenge-shaped shields, one engraved with the arms of Towneley, the other with a presentation inscription
Catalogue Note
The inscription reads: Presented to Miss Towneley on the occasion of her cutting the first sod, for the opening of the Towneley Demesne Colliery. 25th Feby. 1869.
The inscription refers to Alice Mary Towneley, youngest daughter and co-heir of Col. Charles Towneley of the Towneley estates at Towneley, near Burnley, Lancashire, who married as his second wife on 2 August 1871, the Rt. Hon. Sir Thomas O'Hagan, 1st Baron O'Hagan (d. 1885). She died on 20 November 1921.
