Catalogue Note

The crest and coronet are those of the Earls of Dudley, probably for John William Ward, 4th Viscount Dudley and Ward and 9th Baron Ward (1781-1833), who was created Viscount Ednam of Ednam, co. Roxburgh, and Earl Dudley of Dudley Castle on 5 October 1827. He, who was M.P. for various constituencies between 1802 and 1823, became Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in 1827. Upon his death without issue all his titles became extinct with the exception of the Barony of Ward, which devolved upon his second cousin, William Humble, 10th Baron Ward (1781-1835), whose eldest son William (1817-1885) was elevated to the Viscounty and Earldom of Dudley in 1860.
