Description

  • Two relics from Nelson's Victory, comprising:
  • cloth
a small single piece of hand-woven white bunting (c.25 x 50mm.), believed to be a fragment of the St George ensign that flew from the Victory at Trafalgar; and a fragment of sail-cloth (c.85 x 120mm.), believed to be from the Victory's mainsail; both crudely mounted on paper, framed and glazed (frame measuring 306 x 412 mm.); with a note affixed to the reverse ("Piece of the Victorys ensign which covered the coffin at the heroes funeral & was torn in pieces by the mourners & sailors - Piece of admiral Suckling who was present | Also piece of the Victory's main Sail"), the bunting discoloured by adhesive residue, the sail-cloth stained and with two pin-holes

The Naval Chronicle of 1806 recorded that the flags from the Victory (two Union flags and one St George ensign) were borne in procession during Nelson's funeral, and were torn apart and kept as relics at its conclusion.

Provenance
