Description
- Milton Restor'd, and Bentley Depos'd... for E. Curll, 1732
4to (194 x 124mm.), first edition, advertisement at the end for a second number, disbound
This rare Richard Curll pamphlet is a response to Richard Bentley's eccentric edition of Paradise Lost, which had amended 800 passages of the poem on the grounds that Milton had been betrayed by an ignorant amanuensis (and caused a great publicn outcry). Swift's purported contribution is a facetious letter at the end, dated New Year's Day 1732, addressed to Bentley, sending him the opening lines of Milton's poem as transposed into rhymed couplets by "a very ingenious youth of the city". Nine copies are listed in ESTC.
