Catalogue Note
Bentley's edition of Paradise Lost was based on the hypothesis that an editor distorted and added to Milton's text. Pearce responds in his Review, originally issued in three parts, the present copy being unusual in that it retains the original title-page for the first part and the original preface, in addition to the original title-pages. The work by Richardson is an important early treatise on Paradise Lost, written partly in response to Bentley's edition.
