Description

  • Autograph letter signed ("Horatio Nelson"), to Captain Louis of HMS Minotaur
  • ink on paper
informing him that he will, if possible, send him a launch from a prize-ship to be broken up as firewood, or will otherwise order every ship to send him fuel, and providing intelligence gained from officers on the captured vessel ("...the French were daily expected in Egypt but the Turkish govt: told the officer that he should resist them the Ship of War was landing Guns, & they were preparing their batteries..."), 1 page, 8vo, "Saturday Morning" [June or July 1798], integral address leaf, seal residue, light dust-staining, nicks

This unpublished letter shows Nelson grasping at crucial intelligence in the weeks before the Battle of the Nile, as his squadron moved rapidly around the eastern Mediterranean in search of Napoleon and his fleet. Captain (later Sir) Thomas Louis was one of the "Band of Brothers" at the Nile, where the Minotaur received the surrender of the Aquilon.
