Jacob Masen's poem on the origins of humanity was first published, within a volume of collected pieces, in 1664. The central character is Sarcotis: a creation combining Adam and Eve. The poem achieved notoriety in 1747 when William Lauder accused Milton of plagiarism from the poem. Demand for the text produced this volume comprising the Latin original and a French translation (both published by the same publisher), together with a survey of the controversy.
