12mo (137 x 75mm.), first edition, first issue, nineteenth-century roan, covers ruled and decorated in blind, morocco label on spine, some soiling to the text, tear to A5 slightly affecting text, a few other small tears, binding rubbed, spine chipped and with library mark



very rare: ESTC records only 9 copies of this first issue. Milton's own simplified Latin grammar, probably written in the early 1640s. Though he borrowed heavily for quotations from William Lily's grammar (whcih he would have used as a school-boy whilst at St. Paul's) Milton's work was inspired by the belief that working knowledge of the language could be acquired in one year instead of the traditional seven.
