Description

  • A Marble Candelabrum
  • Height 65 1/2 in. 166.4 cm.
with square base decorated in relief on each side with a rosette flanked by horizontal palmettes and surmounted by a broad calyx with four inward-curving leaves, the double-helix shaft composed of two entwined acanthus stalks each culminating in a large pine cone or artichoke, the conjoined fruits flanked by rosettes.

Condition

Shaft repaired from many pieces and with small areas of restoration, some palmettes fragmentary, several ends of acanthus leaves below fruits formerly restored in marble , tops of fruits restored in plaster(?), rosettes below fruits with all petals either restored or formerly restored, in same area surface shows signs of acid cleaning, base (not belonging) with weathered acanthus leaves and repolished sides below, feet restored, separately made ring between base and shaft probably not ancient.
