Description

  • An Attic Black-figured Column Krater
  • Height 13 1/8 in. 33.4 cm.
decorated in front with two apotropaic eyes flanking a mask of Dionysos, and on the back with a satyr and Dionysos seated on a folding stool, each holding a drinking horn, the scene flanked by two apotropaic eyes, a goat in each handle zone, a palmette on each handle plate, the top of the rim decorated with a hydria, a standing figure, six banqueteers, two holding lyres, two holding cups, a dog attached to a post, a warrior between rows of upright spears, and five horsemen, rays above the foot, tongues below the neck, ivy wreath along the side of the rim.

Condition

Repaired from fragments with small areas of restoration along breaklines, a larger area of restoration includes the lower forelegs of a goat in the handle zone, strut of one handle restored, paint somewhat worn and misfired in areas especially on side B (seated Dionysos), small restoration on edge of rim, minor chips.
