Condition

There has been slight fading to the colours of this watercolour. The paper has suffered from minor discoloration. Located at the extreme left hand edge of the work, hidden by the mount, is an area of paper loss, measuring 3.5 cm. There is a soft crease located in the lower right hand edge of the sheet. There is a small tear, measuring 2 cm, at the extreme lower edge of the sheet. This is away from the figures and signature. Within the painted composition there are several very small areas of pigment loss. Despite these the watercolour remains well preserved.

Catalogue Note

The date of this work, 1828, is significant, as it was the year that Thomas Shotter Boys' great friend and mentor Richard Parkes Bonington died. The subject and composition can be compared to Bonington's work during the mid 1820s.
