Il quadro proviene da Palazzo Zen ai Gesuiti, un raffinato palazzo di ispirazione rinascimentale che si affaccia sul Rio di Santa Caterina, eretto nel Cinquecento su progetto dello stesso proprietario, Francesco Zen, con la consulenza di Sebastiano Serlio (v. S. Frommel, "Sebastiano Serlio e il palazzo Zen a Venezia" in Annali di architettura, 13, 2001, pp. 53-69). Le facciate laterali del palazzo, prima del bombardamento del 1849, erano decorate con affreschi di Tintoretto e Andrea Schiavone dedicati all'importante ruolo della famiglia Zen nella politica della Serenissima (v. C. Ridolfi, Le meraviglie dell'arte, Venezia 1648, pp. 15-16).
La monumentale tela qui presentanta, raffigurante La Scienza e le Arti adducono all'Immortalità, costituiva il comparto centrale di un variegato ciclo allegorico dipinto per il soffitto della sala d'angolo a sudovest del piano nobile; le tele laterali, entrambe di formato ottagonale, raffiguravano l'una la Giustizia e il Merito, l'altra la Nobiltà, la Fortuna e la Ricchezza. La composizione dell'opera qui esposta è articolata su due fasce: quella inferiore, dedicata alla sfera dell'oggettività, mostra le figure dell'Astronomia, della Geografia e della Matematica. Quella superiore è invece dedicata alle Arti: la Musica, l'Architettura, la Scultura, la Pittura e la Poesia. Un gioco di sguardi e di atteggiamenti in un ascendente ritmo compositivo spiraliforme conduce alla sommità, dove appare la figura dell'Immortalità, che regge con la mano sinistra il cerchio, suo attributo iconografico, mentre con la destra indica la luce suprema (v. L. de Rossi, Francesco Polazzo, Bergamo 2004, pp. 84-86).
