Catalogue Note
The present lot consists of two of Damien Hirst's earliest spin-drawings. Made in 1994 for an exhibition at Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin entitled Making Beautiful Drawings, these works can be seen as the creative germ for the series of monumental spin paintings that Hirst began making the following year using household gloss paint on rapidly revolving canvases. The drawings for the show at Contemporary Fine Arts were made during Hirst's residency that year in Berlin's 'Artists-in-Berlin Programme' of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). It was a period of tremendous growth and personal development for Hirst; one that culminated in his winning the 1995 Turner Prize and a reputation as the leading artist of his YBA generation.
