  • bronze with brown patina
  • 8 by 25 1/4 by 8 1/2 in. 20.3 by 64.1 by 21.6 cm.
  • Conceived in 1957, one cast was executed in 1957. An additional edition of 6 was executed in 1969, from which the present work is number 4.

Condition

This work is in very good condition. There are a few scattered spot accretions located on the interior of the figure's left foot. There is evidence of dust accretions in the crevices of the modeled surface and scattered evidence of minor handling and wear. There is a strip of felt adhered to the bottom of the sculpture.

Catalogue Note

The present work is a smaller version of the Sprawling Woman that the artist, Kenneth Armitage exhibited at the 29th Venice Biennale in 1958, the year he won the David E. Bright Foundation prize for sculpture. This larger version is no. KA81, and is included in the artist's catalogue raisonné.
