Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The canvas has been lined and the paint layer is stable. There has been significant augmentation in the sky where abrasion of the paint layer has occurred and the red ground has become dominant. Similar, though to a lesser degree, has occurred in the foreground in the water and shadows of the gondolas; some of the finer details such as the darker passages of the architecture have also been compromised. Generally, the painting is in a good condition and many of the details to the figures and the mid-ground are well preserved. the varnish has discoloured and a tonal improvement would be achieved with the removal of the varnish.
Offered in a period gilt wood frame with some damage."
