Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined but the paint layer is raised and unstable with recent loss. There are obvious discoloured restorations denoting previous damage and loss e.g. to the sky, right, the left and right edges, the blue drapery and the angel. However, the majority of the painting is in well preserved original condition with fine details, including glazes and scumbles, intact. The varnish is discoloured and its removal would improve the overall tonality. Offered in a plain gilt wood frame."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

Although traditionally attributed to Guido Reni, this painting would appear to have been painted in Rome during the first half of the 18th century. There is a clear pentimento on the angel in the centre of the composition, whose right hand was originally included blessing Saint Francis Xavier.
