Description

  • Bernardino di Betto, called il Pinturicchio
  • The Crucifixion
  • oil on panel, a lunette

Provenance

Acquired by Henry Stapleton (1848-1892), 9th Lord Beaumont;
Thence by direct family descent.

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The panel, which has suffered previous worm infestation, has been cradled and the joins reinforced. Horizontal stress cracks, caused by the cradling, are evident across the surface, with accompanying paint instability. Flaking restoration around the edges of the lunette is visible. Abraded areas of paint have been augmented, in some areas quite significantly, particularly in the darker passages and blistering of the paint layer can also be detected. Beneath the discoloured and degraded varnish passages of paint in good condition can be seen, the texture and colours well preserved."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
