A Northern European amaranth, kingwood and fruitwood inlaid marquetry dressing table late 18th century/early 19th century

Description

  • 77.5cm. high, 103cm. wide, 44cm.deep; 2ft. 6½in., 3ft. 4½in., 1ft. 5¼in.
inlaid with Chinoiserie scenes, the hinged top opening to reveal a leather lined writing surface enclosing a mirror and a recess with two short and one long drawer flanked by two sliding covers enclosing a recess and two further wells, the inside of the top inlaid with a bird, flowers and scrolling foliage, the lower section with two doors enclosing two drawers, the underside with a paper label for the Bradford Corporation Loan Exhibition.

Sir Charles Henry Tempest, 1st Bt. (1834 - 1894), thence by descent to Ethel Mary Tempest (1869 - 1937) who married Miles Stapleton, 10th Lord Beaumont (1850 - 1895) thence by descent.

Condition

There are old marks chips scratches particularly to the top - some old restorations to the veneers especially to the top with some minor losses. There are splits and age cracks generally. One internal drawer is missing a handle and it would appear that the two internal wells originally had covers, now lacking. The lower drawers are lacking handles and the drawer on the other side is also lacking a handle. The lock is missing from the left door. The marquetry is attractive.
