Catalogue Note

A classical realist painter, Gerhartz was born in Keaskum, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee and still resides there.  He realized his vocation as an artist while a teenager and later studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.  After a brief stint as a commercial artist in Chicago, he found early success at several galleries in the midwest and turned to painting full-time several years ago.  Gerhartz studied with Richard Schmid and was inspired by John Singer Sargent, Nicolai Fechin and Anders Zorn.  This is quite evident in his lyrical landscapes and expressive figural works.  He won the Robert Lougheed Memorial Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame's "Prix de West." in 1998 and is an Art Renewal Center Approved Living Master.
