Catalogue Note

Thomas Eakins made numerous careful studies of Fairman Rogers' horses in both two-dimensional oil studies and three-dimensional plaster and bronze studies before painting The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand (May Morning in a Park)  (1879-1880, Philadelphia Museum of Art). The off-lead horse in panel (a) was likely Rogers' favorite mare, Josephine. These panels were originally double sided (a with b and c with d) and separated sometime before 1961.
