Catalogue Note
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson qui publia, en 1865, le désormais célèbre Alice's aventures in Wonderland sous son pseudonyme Lewis Carroll, s'est aussi adonné, dès les annéees 1850, à la photographie inventée vingt ans plus tôt. Il figure, dans la suite de David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson et avec Julia Margaret Cameron, parmi les photographes amateurs britanniques célèbres pour leurs portraits de l'époque victorienne. L'oeuvre photographique de Carroll est avant tout faite de portraits de jeunes filles, telle Alice Liddell, qui donna son prénom à la jeune protagoniste de ses histoires fantaisistes. Fille de George W. Kitchin, Dean of Winchester, Alexandra Kitchin, surnomée "Xie", fut l'un des modèles favoris de Caroll entre 1869 et 1880 ; la Reine Alexandra était sa marraine.
