front left paw foot probably replaced, losses, repairs.

Condition

Overall good restored condition; plugs to top of top rail; top of right stile with old repaired break now with two replaced sections at join with cresting rail and with vertical age crack; the swag carving to the back rest with a break to the right side at join with the stile with old glue residue present; old repaired break to the top of the left stile at join with cresting rail with plugs; right armrest support with three plugs to the back to stabilize old age crack; three plugs to the left armrest to stabilize old age crack and with infilling to the underside; later drop-in seat; old repaired break to the top of the front left leg at turning; small chip to one petal of the carved flower head above front right leg at side; infilling between the right armrest and the right stile at the join; old repaired break to front right leg with plugs at the back and front; later metal brackets to inner corners of seat rails; old plugged repaired chips to the back legs at join with back seat rail; front left paw foot possibly replaced; overall with some old scratches, discoloration and yellowing; wear and minor chips consistent with age and use.

Catalogue Note

The present chair was probably made in Murshidabad, in eastern India in the second quarter of the 19th century.  The furniture makers in this area of India typically made furniture out of solid or veneerd ivory to English designs by the late 18th century.
