Catalogue Note

With its sinuous outline and Antique motifs, this table represents a fusion of the Rococo and the Neo-classical, reflecting the cross-currents of taste in English furniture design in the third quarter of the 18th century.  Related examples are illustrated in C. Stevens and S. Whittington, 18th Century English Furniture: The Norman Adams Collection, 1983, p. 311; M. Jourdain and F. Rose, English Furniture: The Georgian Period, 1953, pl. 65; J. C. Rogers, English Furniture, 1967, fig. 177; Partridge Summer Exhibition Catalgoue, 1987, no. 25, pp. 78-79.  A similar pair of concertina-action tables was sold, Sotheby's, London, The Moller Collection, November 18, 1993, lot 94.

A pair of George III mahogany concertina-action games tables, with hinges also stamped WS, was sold in these rooms, October 19, 2001, lot 285 and again, April 4, 2007, lot 158.
