Catalogue Note

This fine Chinese miniature bureau is similar to an example sold, Sotheby's, London, November 23, 2005, lot 9 (£4800).  A padouk bureau in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA,  with an almost identical interior, is illustrated, Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, 1997, p. 224, pl. 123.  Based on an English or Continental design, the present lot was probably made for a child or as a curiosity.
