Condition

Original canvas. There are scattered flecks of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably to the sky in the composition and to the right side. Apart from stretcher marks to each side and very fine scattered craquelure, this work is in good condition, with fine detail and fresh colours, and ready to hang. Held in a simple, wide, gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Marianne Prause dates this work to the early 1840s.  It is likely that it was painted near Dresden, depicting either the Zittauer mountain range or the Dresden Elbsandstein Gebirge.
