Condition

The board is in good condition, flat and even. There are no signs of retouching visible under ultraviolet light. Apart from a few very minor spots of very fine craquelure, notably to the red and brown areas of pigment, this work is in very good condition, with bright colours and fine detail, and ready to hang. Held in a decorative, wide, gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

Catalogue Note

According to Paolo Serafini, the present work belongs to a group of fourteen known paintings by Vervloet depicting Turkish subjects, painted between 1842 and 1846. It is listed as number 242 in the artist's handbook of his works, Sa vie, as dito [dipinto] turc en prière.
