Condition
The canvas has been re-lined. There are scattered spots of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably to the figure's right breast and armpit. Apart from scattered fine craquelure, notably to the figure's left thigh, stomach, and to the dark pigments at the lower left corner, this work is in very good condition, with strong impasto and rich colours. Held in a narrow, decorative, bronze-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

Catalogue Note
Painted in 1913, the present work is one of a series of paintings Corinth executed as the ballroom decorations for the Katzenellenbogen house in Freienhagen. According to Charlotte Berend-Corinth the glass that the Baccante is drinking from belonged to Corinth and he used it only on very special occasions.
