Condition

Original canvas. There are scattered spots of retouching and infilling visible under ultraviolet light, notably to the upper left corner, to a spot on the sheets at the right, and some minor flecks to the figure's torso, inner thigh and cheek. Apart from some fine scattered craquelure and surface dirt, this work is in very good condition, with rich colours and a strong surface. Held in a simple, wide, gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Painted in 1906, Uppvaknande  (The Awakening) belongs to a series of paintings from that year, also comprising Morning Atmosphere and The Prisoner. On the strength of the present work Zorn was awarded a gold medal in the international exhibition in Munich in 1909.

The dramatic contrasts of light and shadow in the present work serve to give further naturalistic solidity and surface texture to the subject. As Karl Asplund described: '... the play of warm and cold light on female forms [is] the favorite theme of the painter' (Karl Asplund, Anders Zorn: His Life and Work, London, 1921, p. 57).
