Condition

The pedestal is not polished and there are chips to the edges consistent with age and use. A large chip on the top part is visible in the catalogue as well. In between the top and middle section of the pedestals (as visible in the catalogue illustration) there are wooden wedges supporting the top. It is possible that the top was once revolving. The marble sculpture is glued to a 2 inch high marble base. There are no restorations. The group is dirty and could be easily cleaned. However, there is some pitting to the girl's back and chest filled with dirt. Good condition and presentation, will enhance with cleaning.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

The title 'L'Innocenza difesa dalla Fedelta' translates to 'innocence defended by loyalty', where innocence is represented by the young girl holding a floral wreath and loyalty is represented by the dog who pins the snake to the ground, thus defending and protecting the innocent child.

For the identical model by Benzoni which is slightly different in size (82 cm high), see Alfonso Panzetta, Nuovo Dizionario degli scultori Italiani dell'ottocento e del primo novecento, G. Canale & C. spa, Borgaro, 2003, fig. 188., p. 145.
