Description
25 leaves (2 complete and consecutive gatherings), 361mm. by 247mm., biblical text in 25 lines on every second ruled line, inset with the gloss on either side ruled for up to 49 lines, written space 225mm. by 130mm., written in two sizes of an early Gothic script, text from Luke 22:3-John 4:23, foliated in pencil 84-108, small red and blue initials with penwork tracery to contrast, large decorative red and blue paragraph marks for each marginal gloss throughout, two large initials in blue and red (that opening the prologue to John 3 lines in height: that opening John 1:1 9 lines in height) with elaborate penwork tracery and infill, many medieval sidenotes in pen and dry-point, a few small tears with no damage to text, else in excellent condition

These leaves are probably from Phillipps MS. 13,805, a fragment of the Gospels of Luke and John, subsequently Spurgeon's College, South Norwood, MS. 1. Other leaves were sold in these rooms, 6 December 2005, lot 2, and 29 June 2007, lot 3.
