Description

with a flat molded extended cavetto cornice above two doors with chequered banding and with the original beveled mirror plates with upper re-entrant corners opening to an interior with shelves above pigeon holes and small drawers, with two candle slides above a well figured, banded and chequered inlaid slant front containing an interior fitted with valanced pigeon holes above small drawers with chequer inlay and with a central cupboard, the door similarly inlaid with geometric patterns and flower heads, the similarly inlaid pilasters concealing document drawers, above four similarly figured and banded and graduated drawers, the later flat brass handles pierced and shaped, and raised on shaped bracket feet.
Condition
Good overall condition with old mellow faded color with waxed patination. Small losses to moldings to cornice and small replacements and losses to banding overall. Usual old scratches and blemishes. The left side with a stress crack following the lines of construction at the lower left side with some tearing of the veneers, the other side all with old vertical age cracks. Runner to lower drawers replaced. Some later blocks to feet. Original mirrors with some discoloration and crystallization to lower edges. Brass possibly old, but replaced, with some infilled plugs indicating position of the earlier set.

Catalogue Note
The simple profile of the present cabinet is enhanced by the richly figured burr walnut veneers and the original finely beveled mirror plates with their unusual re-entrant corners. The fitted interior is also unusual being inlaid with bone in various geometric patterns and flower heads.
