Description

  • height of each (with candlestick) 16 in.; height (with berry finial) 15 1/4 in.; width (with elephant mask) 5 in.; depth 4 in.
  • 40.5 cm; 38.5 cm; 13 cm; 10 cm
each with a reversible lid with a foliate berry finial on one side and with a poppy flower shaped candle branch on the other.

Condition

Old, minor marks and dents around the edges of the reverse of the candlesticks, with rubbing of the gilding to the burnished surfaces. The obverse side of the candlesticks in overall good condition. Further rubbing of the gilding to the burnished rims and bodies of the Medici vases, suppors and base. The relief opaque sections in better condition, with minor traces of verdigris and surface dirt. In otherwise good condition.

Catalogue Note

This is an unusual variant of a famous model, usually represented with horse mounts and was popular in the early 19th century. The elephant  mount, symbolic of fame, can be seen in an identical pair, which was sold, Christie's, London, December 1, 2005, lot 179.
