Catalogue Note
The inlaid brass stars and anthemions found on this fine pair of cabinets are details which are associated with the documented work of the London cabinetmaker, George Oakley (1773-1840), 'who produced stylish furniture in the Grecian taste during the decades spanning the turn of the 19th century. (See: Beard and Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp.658-660). Both of these details are found on pieces by or attributed to him including a set of Quartetto Table commissioned from him in 1810 by Charles Madryll Cheere of Paoworth Hall Cambridge, sold, Sotheby's, London, April 9, 1992, lot 109, and a bookcase attributed to him inlaid with stars and anthemions, sold, Christie's, London, July 8, 1993, lot 103.
