Description

the shield shaped back edged with leaf tips continuing to down-swept arms carved with leaves and pearl beading, the seat with a serpentine shaped front and supported on turned tapered and fluted legs headed by patera and with collars of gilt leaves and pearl beading, with turned toes similarly ornamented with leaf tips. Condition

The catalogue illustration is a fair representation of color and tone. The decoration is heavily refreshed as stated, and in places has flaked to reveal timber beneath. There is some very minor old worm activity to the frame. Structurally sound.

Catalogue Note

Although the polychrome japanned decoration of this chair has been refreshed, it is still a rare survival as the fragile nature of finishes such as this are seldom found. George Hepplewhite noted in The Cabinetmaker and Upholsterers Guide that a sofa in the French style 'should be gilt or japanned in bright colour'.
