Catalogue Note

This impressive pair of large bronze horses displays them with their forehands raised off the ground at different angles. The horses' open mouths and wild manes add to the drama. But the harness and neck straps (probably inspired by those worn by the Greek bronze horses of San Marco in Venice to draw the quadriga) show that these horses are not untamed, but frightened by a momentary event, such as lightning, fire or an earthquake.
