Description
- a pair of bronze andiron figures of Mars and Venus
- Italian, Venice, late 17th century
on wood socles
Condition
Overall the condition of the bronze is good. There is ditr and some minor wear to the figures consistent with age and purpose. Both figures have remnants of solder to their groin area, perhaps due to a later addition and subsequent removal of fig leaves. Mars's weapon is missing from his right hand whereas the blade of Venus' sword is lost. There is some white pigment to Venus's left calf and the back of the dolphin. There are some minor areas of rough casting, particularly at the base of Mars and to the right foot of Venus. Original repairs of an area of fissure are visible at Venus' neck. The black painted wooden bases are both split and have some minor worming.
